Google has given the Pixel Buds Pro 2 a sizeable software update with improved noise cancellation, sleep detection and Gemini audio controls.
The software features will begin rolling out to Pixel Buds Pro 2 owners in September, and these come rather than a set of Pixel Buds Pro 3.
One of the more practical changes is an improvement to the Pixel Buds Pro 2’s active noise cancellation. Google says the earbuds can now maintain more consistent noise reduction and will apply regardless of how the ear tips sit in your ears.
That should make ANC less dependent on getting a perfect fit. In particular, Google specifically claims the improved system can maintain noise reduction even during movement such as jumping jacks.
The update also adds new Gemini audio controls. These allow users to adjust bass and treble using Google’s assistant based on what they’re listening to.
Google is also making the Buds Pro 2 more useful at bedtime by adding sleep synchronisation with the Pixel Watch.
When the earbuds detect that you’ve fallen asleep, they can automatically pause whatever you’re listening to. It’s a small addition but one that could be particularly useful for anyone who regularly falls asleep to music or podcasts.
Live Translate is also being expanded, with Google improving support for more than 70 languages.
The Pixel Buds Pro 2 are becoming more tightly connected to Google’s growing hardware ecosystem, too. Owners of a Pixel Tag can ask Gemini to locate or ring a missing tag directly through the earbuds. This works without needing to take out their phone.
Alongside the software update, Google has introduced an Olive finish for the Pixel Buds Pro 2. It matches the Olive colour offered on the Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold.
The new finish joins Hazel, Porcelain, Peony and Moonstone. As with the existing colours, the outer-facing portion of the earbuds gets the new finish, while the rest remains black. The charging case remains white.
The Olive Pixel Buds Pro 2 are available to order now. Meanwhile, the new ANC improvements, sleep detection and other software features will roll out starting in September.
