Samsung has unveiled two new portable SSDs with USB4 connectivity, with the flagship P9 promising transfer speeds of up to 4,000MB/s and capacities reaching 8TB.
The P9 and P7 were announced at Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, expanding Samsung’s portable storage range with faster performance aimed at everything from professional video production to everyday file storage.
The company says the P Series will begin rolling out globally from August 31, although availability and capacities may vary by market.
The P9 is the more capable of the two drives, offering sequential read speeds of up to 4,000MB/s and write speeds of up to 3,800MB/s. That’s roughly twice the performance of Samsung’s previous-generation T9, which reaches up to 2,000MB/s for both sequential reads and writes over USB 3.2 Gen 2×2.
The higher bandwidth should make a noticeable difference for users moving large files regularly. Samsung says the P9’s sustained write performance is also sufficient for 12K direct recording, allowing professional users to capture and store large RAW files and ultra-high-resolution video directly to the portable SSD.
The P7 is positioned as the more versatile option, although Samsung hasn’t provided specific read and write speeds for this model. It uses USB4 and is designed to work across desktops, laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles and cameras, making it a more general-purpose option for users who need fast external storage.
Durability is another focus. Samsung says the P7 has undergone 2-metre drop testing alongside shock and vibration testing, which should make it better suited to being carried between locations.
Both SSDs will be available in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB capacities. UK pricing starts at £296.09 for the 1TB P9 and £246.79 for the 1TB P7, rising to £2,342.79 and £1,952.29 respectively for the 8TB models.
Samsung’s new P Series certainly isn’t cheap, but the P9 in particular is aimed at users who need the combination of very high capacity and USB4-level performance rather than simply more portable storage.
