ExpressVPN is replacing its Aircove routers with a more powerful option. The new Fortify (GL-MT6000) is built on GL.iNet’s Flint 2 platform and brings faster Wi-Fi, more Ethernet options and much higher VPN speeds, while also bundling 12 months of ExpressVPN Advanced for new and returning users.
The upgrade is fairly substantial. Fortify supports Wi-Fi 6 AX6000, with speeds of up to 1,148Mbps on 2.4GHz and 4,804Mbps on 5GHz, alongside 4×4 MU-MIMO. ExpressVPN says it can handle up to 86 devices at once and reach VPN speeds of up to 900Mbps, compared with up to 330Mbps on the outgoing Aircove.
Inside, there’s a quad-core 2.0GHz processor, 1GB of DDR4 memory and 8GB of eMMC storage. Connectivity includes two 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports and four Gigabit Ethernet ports, while Multi-WAN failover and Smart Queue Management are included for managing busy networks. There’s also support for AdGuard Home for network-level ad and tracker blocking.
Fortify runs on GL.iNet’s OpenWrt-based networking platform and initially connects to ExpressVPN through WireGuard and OpenVPN DCO. ExpressVPN’s own Lightway protocol isn’t available at launch, but the company says it plans to add support in a future update.
The router also changes how ExpressVPN is approaching its hardware. GL.iNet supplies the networking hardware, firmware and platform, while ExpressVPN handles the VPN and privacy technology. Fortify is the first product in what the companies describe as a longer-term co-branded router partnership.
Meanwhile, Aircove and Aircove Go are being retired from sale, with production ending for both. Existing owners don’t need to make any changes, though. Aircove will continue receiving critical security updates and customer support through 2027, while Aircove Go will be supported through 2028. Owners will also be eligible for a discount on Fortify by contacting ExpressVPN support.
Fortify is available from the official GL.iNet website from September 16 for $199.99, with Amazon availability expected shortly after launch. Regional pricing will be announced separately. The included 12-month Advanced subscription also covers ExpressVPN’s apps, along with features such as ExpressKeys, Advanced Protection and ExpressMailGuard.
