Eight Sleep’s latest smart sleep system is getting a major redesign, and the Pod 6 looks considerably easier to live with. The new system packs a smaller hub, faster temperature adjustments and far more biometric sensors into the mattress cover, although it still comes with Eight Sleep’s famously high price tag.
Eight Sleep says the Pod 6 has been rebuilt from the ground up, with the hub now small enough to fit underneath most bed frames. It works by pumping temperature-controlled water through the included mattress cover, with the company claiming temperature changes are around 20% faster than before. That should help it respond more quickly to night sweats and chills during the night.
The bigger upgrade is underneath the cover. The Pod 6 has 18 biometric sensors, up from just two in the Pod 5, tracking things including heart rate, breathing rate, heart rate variability, snoring and sleep stages. You don’t need to wear a smartwatch or other wearable to get this data, as it’s collected through the cover and shown in Eight Sleep’s app.
Those sensors also feed into the company’s AI engine and Autopilot system, which can automatically adjust the temperature based on your sleep stage and the ambient temperature. Eight Sleep says the system can even distinguish between two people sleeping close together, or separate a human sleeper’s signals from a pet lying on the bed.
There’s also a new smaller version for solo sleepers. It offers the same functionality but drops the dual-zone temperature controls, which also makes it the cheaper option.
And that’s important because the Pod 6 is still very much a premium purchase. The solo model starts at $2,000, while larger versions can reach $3,000, depending on mattress size. Every model also requires an Autopilot subscription costing $17 to $25 per month.
It’s worth remembering that you’re not buying a mattress here. The Pod 6 is a smart sleep system made up of the redesigned hub and mattress cover – you need to source the actual mattress yourself.
