Bose is bringing wired listening back with a new pair of USB-C earbuds that combine a plug-and-play connection with active noise cancellation.
The Bose Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds mark the company’s return to wired earbuds after more than a decade. They arrive with a few modern upgrades that make them rather different from the wired models of old, and cost $99, with shipping set to begin on October 15.
There’s no Bluetooth pairing or battery to worry about here; the earbuds connect directly to compatible USB-C phones, tablets and computers, and draw power from the device to power elements like ANC.
Bose is offering them in Black and White Smoke, along with a limited-edition Dewdrop Mint finish.
The wired connection also brings some useful benefits. Bose says its SoundDesign digital signal processing supports lossless audio. Meanwhile, the USB Audio Class 2 protocol accepts source input at different sample and bit rates. Playback output is fixed at 24-bit/48kHz. The connection also keeps latency low, handy for gaming, watching videos or creating content.
Noise cancellation is handled by Bose’s QuietControl technology, using four microphones across the two earbuds to monitor and reduce surrounding sounds. There are three listening modes: Quiet Mode for noise cancellation, Aware Mode for letting outside sounds through, and ANC Off for standard wired listening.
There’s also an in-line remote with physical buttons for volume, playback, calls and switching between noise modes. A dedicated microphone sits on the back of the remote for voice pickup. Bose claims it helps reduce noise caused by the cable rubbing against clothing.
The earbuds come with a 4.2-foot cable, three sizes of silicone eartips and medium and large stability wings. They’re also IPX4-rated for water resistance and come with a zippered carry case.
Pre-orders are available now exclusively to My Bose members through Bose and Best Buy, with general availability following on October 15.
