GoPro is rolling out a new firmware update for its Mission 1 Pro, bringing several improvements aimed at making the action camera better suited to photography rather than just video recording.
The update introduces a new burst shooting mode, faster shutter response and improved camera controls, addressing some of the frustrations photographers have experienced when using the Mission 1 Pro to capture still images.
While GoPro’s Mission lineup is primarily designed for video, the Mission 1 Pro packs a 50MP 1-inch sensor capable of capturing detailed RAW images in DNG format. That makes it a potentially useful option for photographers looking for a compact, rugged camera for ultra-wide shots and selfies.
The biggest addition is the new burst mode, which allows users to capture up to 100 photos at 12MP or 20 RAW images at the full 50MP resolution in quick succession. This should make it easier to photograph fast-moving subjects without having to rely on perfectly timed single shots.
GoPro is also promising reduced shutter lag, particularly welcome given previous reports of noticeable delays when shooting at the camera’s maximum resolution. Even the shutter sound has been updated, replacing the rather sharp beep with a new audio cue.
The improvements extend beyond photography, too. The Mission 1 ILS, which supports interchangeable lenses, now gains official compatibility with anamorphic lenses, including support for digital image stabilisation when using them.
Meanwhile, iPhone and iPad users can now wirelessly control the camera through the GoPro Mission Monitor app, complete with a larger live preview for framing shots remotely.
There are still a few limitations, however. The update doesn’t introduce a minimum shutter speed setting for automatic mode, and manually adjusting shutter speed still requires navigating through the camera’s menus.
Still, the changes should make the Mission 1 Pro a more practical option for photographers who want something smaller and tougher than a traditional camera, without giving up the flexibility of shooting RAW.
