SanDisk’s home security camera is your 24/7 Guardian

SanDisk has launched its new Guardian Series, a range of high-endurance memory cards designed to keep home security cameras and dash cams recording around the clock, with prices starting at just £20.99.

The new line-up includes the SanDisk Security Cam Card and SanDisk Dash Cam Card, both built to handle continuous recording and repeated overwriting without the demands of everyday surveillance taking a toll on storage performance.

Unlike a typical memory card used for occasional photos or videos, storage inside a security camera can be writing footage for hours at a time, often overwriting older recordings as it runs out of space. That constant cycle can put additional strain on flash memory, making endurance particularly important for devices expected to operate 24/7.

For home security users, the Security Cam Card is the more interesting of the two. It can record in Full HD up to 4K UHD with footage stored either locally or in the cloud storage, allowing compatible cameras to continue saving recordings even when the Wi-Fi connection drops. It’s a useful distinction for anyone who doesn’t want to rely entirely on an internet connection or a cloud subscription to access footage.

Local recording also means users can keep footage directly on their devices rather than depending exclusively on remote servers. However, there’s a trade-off: if the camera and its memory card are stolen or damaged then the recordings stored only on the card would be lost.

SanDisk says the Guardian Series is designed to work with a wide variety of compatible security cameras and dash cams, although buyers will still need to check their device’s supported card capacities and specifications before upgrading.

The card is also designed to withstand temperature extremes, water and dust, making it suitable for outdoor security cameras that need to operate throughout the year. Storage options range from 32GB to 512GB, giving users flexibility on how much footage they want to record at any given time.

Meanwhile, the Dash Cam Card brings similar durability to vehicles. It’s designed to handle the heat and humidity of long drives while supporting continuous Full HD and 4K UHD recording.

Sandisk claims the 512GB Dash Cam Card can withstand up to 40,000 hours of recorded driving, based on internal endurance testing. The 256GB version is rated for 20,000 hours, while the 128GB, 64GB and 32GB models are rated for 10,000, 5,000 and 2,500 hours respectively. These figures are based on Full HD recording, with lower totals expected when recording in 4K.

Those endurance figures are particularly relevant for drivers who leave their dash cams recording during long journeys or use parking surveillance features. However, they’re endurance ratings rather than guarantees of how long a card will last in every setup, as recording resolution and usage patterns can affect its lifespan.

Both cards are available now through select retailers, starting at £20.99. While SanDisk isn’t launching a security camera of its own, the new storage line-up could be a useful upgrade for anyone relying on local footage to keep an eye on their home or vehicle.
