“It looks terrible” – Amazon’s supposed new Kindle homescreen is dividing users testing it out

Amazon appears to be testing a new look for the Kindle library, but the changes aren’t going down particularly well with some users who have already received the update.

The redesigned interface was spotted by a Reddit user who reported seeing a pop-up saying, “Your library has a new look.” The update changes how books appear on the homescreen, adding white title boxes across the covers and moving reading progress percentages into the middle of each thumbnail.

While the changes might sound minor, they’re proving divisive among Kindle owners who prefer the cleaner, more minimalist layout.

One of the biggest complaints is how the new white title boxes cover parts of the book artwork. The original poster also criticised how the text looks in dark mode, describing the overall design as outdated compared to the previous interface.

Other users were quick to agree, with one commenting, “I agree. It looks terrible.” Another said they appreciated the more compact layout, which allows more books to appear on screen, but disliked the white bars covering the covers.

Not everyone is against the redesign, though. Some users pointed out that book titles can be difficult to read on certain covers, particularly on black-and-white E Ink displays. Having titles displayed separately could make browsing a library easier, especially for readers who struggle with low-contrast artwork. The bigger question is whether Amazon plans to roll out the changes more widely.

Interestingly, the original poster said their sister and two friends still had the old interface despite running the same Kindle software version. That has led to speculation that Amazon is conducting A/B testing, where different users receive different versions of an interface before a wider release. However, Amazon hasn’t confirmed whether this is an official test or when the redesigned library might become available to everyone.

For now, there doesn’t appear to be a way to disable the new layout. The Reddit user claimed that even resetting their Kindle to factory settings failed to restore the previous design. While the updated interface could make book titles easier to read, the reaction suggests Kindle users would appreciate having the option to choose how their library looks rather than being stuck with a redesign they never asked for.
