Apple to phase out non-touch MacBook Pros by 2027

Apple is reportedly planning to phase out its non-touch MacBook Pro models next year, leaving the entry-level 14-inch version as the only option without a touchscreen.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple intends to discontinue its older M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro models when the second generation of its touchscreen laptops arrives in 2027. The move would leave buyers choosing between a more affordable 14-inch MacBook Pro without touch support and the company’s considerably more expensive premium models.

Apple recently introduced its first touchscreen MacBook Pros, bringing new PROLED XDR displays to the 14-inch and 16-inch models. However, the company kept its previous M5 Pro and M5 Max versions on sale, giving customers a cheaper alternative to the redesigned laptops.

That arrangement reportedly won’t last beyond next year. While the higher-end models are expected to move to M7 Pro and M7 Max chips, with a greater focus on AI performance, the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro will also receive an M7 upgrade and adopt the thinner, lighter design. The key difference is that it will continue to lack a touchscreen.

The change could also make choosing a MacBook Pro considerably more expensive for anyone wanting touch support. Apple’s new touchscreen models start at $2,899 for the 14-inch version and $3,399 for the 16-inch, representing a $400 increase over the previous premium models. Meanwhile, the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,999.

If Apple maintains those prices in 2027, buyers would face a $900 jump from the standard MacBook Pro to the cheapest touchscreen model. That’s a significant difference, particularly for users who want the newer display technology without necessarily needing the extra performance of an M7 Pro or M7 Max chip.

For now, the older non-touch models remain available alongside Apple’s redesigned lineup. The new touchscreen MacBook Pros are currently available to pre-order, with deliveries scheduled to begin on 6 November.

Apple hasn’t confirmed its plans for the 2027 MacBook Pro range, but if Gurman’s report proves accurate, touchscreen support could soon become one of the clearest differences between the entry-level and premium models.
