Apple has acknowledged an issue affecting some Apple Watch users following the recent daylight saving time change, with the smartwatch continuing to display the wrong time even after the clocks have gone back. Fortunately, the company has shared a couple of simple ways to fix it.
According to a new Apple support document, the bug causes the Always On display to show a time that’s one hour out of sync when the wearer’s wrist is lowered. However, the correct time appears as soon as the screen is activated, either by raising the wrist or tapping the display.
The issue appears to be limited to how the time is displayed rather than the watch’s actual timekeeping. Apple has confirmed that other features, including alarms, continue to work as expected, so users shouldn’t have to worry about missing their morning wake-up call.
How to fix the Apple Watch time bug
Apple recommends two straightforward fixes for anyone experiencing the issue. The first is to switch to a different watch face before returning to the original one, which should refresh the display and restore the correct time. Alternatively, users can simply restart their Apple Watch.
There’s also some good news for those who haven’t noticed the problem or don’t want to change anything. Apple says the bug should resolve itself automatically at midnight following the time change, meaning it isn’t something users necessarily need to troubleshoot.
The problem isn’t entirely new, either. Similar complaints were previously reported by Apple Watch users in Europe when the clocks went back in late October. With daylight saving time ending across most of the US on November 1, more users may have encountered the same issue over the weekend.
Apple hasn’t explained what’s causing the glitch, but it recommends keeping the Apple Watch updated with the latest software to receive future bug fixes and security improvements. For now, switching watch faces or restarting the device should be enough to get the Always On display showing the right time again.
