Google Photos is rolling out a new setting that finally lets users turn off background music in Memories. This gives them more control over how they revisit their favourite photos and videos.
Until now, Memories would automatically play background music when showing highlights from your photo library, which was not always ideal, particularly when watching videos with their own audio. The latest update addresses that frustration by introducing a dedicated toggle that disables the extra music without affecting the original sound of your recordings.
According to Google’s official announcement, the new option can be found under Photos settings > Preferences > Memories, where a “Background music” toggle will let users switch off the soundtrack entirely. It is a global setting, meaning you won’t have to manually mute the music every time you open a different Memory.
Importantly, turning it off won’t silence your videos. Google confirms that any original audio captured in a video will continue playing normally, so you will still hear conversations, background sounds and anything else recorded at the time. The change also applies to all Memories, including Google’s annual end-of-year recap.
For those who prefer having music accompany their photo highlights, Google is making some changes there too. The company says it has refreshed the selection of background tracks, so users who leave the feature enabled may notice different music playing alongside their Memories.
The setting is rolling out across all platforms, although it has not reached everyone just yet. It was reportedly still missing from Google Photos version 7.99 on Android, so some users may need to wait before it appears in their settings.
It’s a relatively small update, but a useful one for anyone who would rather hear the original moments captured in their videos than have Google add a soundtrack of its own.
