Xiaomi developing iPhone Duo-like device – without folding display

Xiaomi could be the latest smartphone maker to move away from the traditional tall and narrow design, with a new leak suggesting the company is working on a wider Android phone that doesn’t fold.

According to well-known Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station, Xiaomi is developing a conventional smartphone with a wider display, similar to the outer screens found on foldables like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Apple’s iPhone Duo.

The device could also feature a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, although other specifications remain unclear.

The idea is to bring the wider proportions of foldable phones to a regular handset, giving users more horizontal screen space without needing a folding display. That could make everyday tasks like reading, browsing and typing more comfortable, particularly for those who find today’s increasingly tall smartphones awkward to use.

While the leaker hasn’t shared any screen measurements, the upcoming device could take inspiration from Xiaomi’s recently launched 18 Fold, which features a 5.38-inch cover display with an aspect ratio close to 3:2. That would make it noticeably wider than most conventional smartphones, although there’s no confirmation Xiaomi plans to use the same dimensions.

Xiaomi isn’t alone in exploring the idea. Huawei has already introduced the Pura X View, a wide-screen smartphone without a folding mechanism, while OPPO is reportedly developing a similar device that could feature two 200MP cameras. Previous leaks have also suggested that vivo and Honor are considering wider handsets, with several Chinese manufacturers potentially bringing their versions to market in 2027.

It’s an interesting shift for an industry that has spent years making smartphone displays taller while keeping devices relatively narrow. Wider screens could offer some of the usability benefits of foldables without the added complexity of hinges and flexible displays.

For now, Xiaomi hasn’t confirmed the device or provided any indication of when it might launch. And while the first wave of these wider smartphones could remain exclusive to China, later models may eventually reach international markets.
