Instagram Edits comes to Mac with free 4K exports and multi-track editing

Instagram has brought its Edits video editing app to Mac, giving creators access to more advanced editing tools, free 4K exports and a way to publish videos.

Previously limited to Android and iOS, Edits now offers a desktop experience with a multi-track timeline, more precise editing controls and support for different video formats.

Better still, the app remains completely free. With no watermark added to exported videos, although there’s one catch: it only works on Macs powered by Apple’s M-series chips, leaving older Intel-based models out.

The biggest improvement is the multi-track timeline, which gives users more control over how video clips, audio and other elements come together. Creators can add keyframes for transitions, view audio waveforms to make more accurate cuts and use colour wheels and curves to fine-tune the look of their footage. These are the sorts of tools you’d normally expect from a dedicated desktop video editor, rather than an app originally designed for making Instagram Reels.

Instagram has also included a library of licensed, royalty-free music, alongside support for importing custom LUTs and fonts. The latter should be particularly useful for creators who want to maintain a consistent look across their videos without having to recreate the same colour grading or text styles each time.

Another handy addition is direct publishing to Instagram, removing the need to export a finished video and then upload it separately through the website or mobile app. Edits also supports multiple aspect ratios, which should make it easier to work on different types of content as Instagram expands beyond its traditional focus on short, vertical videos.

The Mac release builds on several updates Instagram has introduced since launching Edits on mobile. These include ready-made templates, storyboards, more detailed text customisation and the ability to import public Reels for remixing. More recently, Instagram added an AI assistant that analyses how a creator’s Reels perform and suggests what they could post next based on engagement data.

Moreover, the move to desktop puts Edits in a more interesting position against established video editing software. It isn’t necessarily a replacement for professional tools such as Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere Pro, but free 4K exports, a proper multi-track timeline and no watermarks make it an appealing option for creators who don’t need a complicated editing setup.

Instagram Edits for Mac is available now as a free download from the official Edits website, while the mobile versions remain available on Android and iOS.
