Qualcomm has dismissed reports that its Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor is suffering from overheating issues, following claims that Samsung could abandon the chip in favour of its own Exynos 2700.
The rumours originated from reports in South Korea, which suggested Samsung was in discussions with Qualcomm over potential thermal problems with the next-generation flagship processor. The concerns reportedly prompted Samsung to reconsider using the chip in its upcoming smartphones, with the company’s in-house Exynos 2700 emerging as a possible alternative.
However, Qualcomm has now responded directly to the claims, telling 9to5Google that reports of overheating are inaccurate. A company spokesperson said: “Recent reporting about thermal issues related to Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is inaccurate. We are proud of the innovation and strong momentum behind our next-generation flagship platform and continue to work closely with global OEMs to deliver premium user experiences.”
Qualcomm’s Chief Marketing Officer, Don McGuire, also addressed the speculation on X, stating that there are “no systemic thermal issues” with the processor. While the company has firmly rejected the reports, Samsung has yet to confirm whether it intends to use the Snapdragon chip or switch to its own Exynos alternative.
The concerns are particularly noteworthy given the processor’s reported specifications. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is said to feature two CPU cores running at 5GHz, alongside substantial CPU and GPU performance improvements over the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. With such high clock speeds, thermal management will be an important factor in how the chip performs during demanding tasks, particularly gaming.
Despite the speculation, several upcoming flagship smartphones have already been confirmed to use the processor, including the Motorola Signature 27, Xiaomi 18, RedMagic 12 Pro Plus, Honor Magic 9 Pro Max and OnePlus 16.
For now, Qualcomm remains confident in its next-generation chipset, although its actual thermal performance will become clearer once devices powered by the processor undergo independent testing.
