Motorola Buds Ultra 27 bring Bose sound and AI translation to challenge AirPods

Motorola is taking another shot at the premium earbuds market with the Moto Buds Ultra 27, combining Bose-tuned audio, adaptive noise cancellation, and AI features that go beyond simply listening to music.

Launched alongside the Motorola Signature 27 smartphone, the new earbuds are the company’s latest attempt to compete with established names such as Apple and Samsung. They offer several features typically found in flagship wireless earbuds, including spatial audio, head tracking, and real-time translation, though some advanced functions require a compatible Motorola phone.

According to Motorola’s announcement, the Moto Buds Ultra 27 use a dual-driver setup, pairing an 11mm dynamic driver with a balanced armature to handle different audio frequencies. Bose’s SoundDesign tuning is intended to deliver more detailed sound, while QuietControl active noise cancellation automatically adjusts to surrounding noise levels. Transparency Mode also lets you hear what’s happening around you without removing the earbuds.

Motorola has included Hi-Res Audio support alongside Dolby Atmos and Dolby Head Tracking, although the latter two features are limited to compatible Motorola smartphones. Each earbud also packs three microphones and a dedicated Voice Pickup Unit, which should help make calls clearer in noisy surroundings.

The more interesting additions are on the software side. AI Live Translate lets users hear translated conversations directly through the earbuds, potentially making them useful when travelling or speaking with someone in another language. However, it relies on a compatible Motorola smartphone with the company’s translation app, and supported languages vary.

There’s also Motorola Qira integration, allowing users to summon the company’s AI assistant by long-pressing the left earbud. Hands-free activation using the phrase “Hey Qira” is planned for the coming months, while Head Gestures let users answer or reject calls with a nod or shake of the head. Wear Detection, Dual Connection and Audio Share round out the convenience features.

Battery life is rated at up to eight hours on a single charge or 37 hours with the charging case, with wireless charging included. The earbuds also carry an IP57 dust and water resistance rating and support Google’s Find Hub network, making them easier to locate if they go missing.

The Moto Buds Ultra 27 certainly have the specifications to challenge more established premium earbuds, but their reliance on Motorola phones for certain features could make them a harder sell to users outside the company’s ecosystem.

Motorola says the Moto Buds Ultra 27 will launch in the US in the coming months, although pricing and an exact release date haven’t been announced.
