Google’s long-rumoured screen-less fitness tracker may finally be taking shape, and it looks like it could launch as the Fitbit Air.
A new report suggests the lightweight wearable, which has already been teased publicly by NBA star Steph Curry, will ditch a display entirely. Instead, it will focus on continuous health tracking, much like Whoop’s popular band.
While details are still thin, the “Air” branding hints at a lighter, more minimal design, with early images showing a slim, unobtrusive band. That lines up with earlier reports. Those reports point to a wearable for all-day (and all-night) use, where battery life and passive tracking matter more than on-device interaction.
The bigger shift might be happening behind the scenes. Google is reportedly planning to rebrand Fitbit Premium as Google Health. This will fold its subscription features under a broader ecosystem. As part of that plan, Gemini AI is expected to power more personalised insights inside the Fitbit app. This builds on the existing Health Coach preview, which already offers tailored recommendations based on user data.
As with rivals like Whoop, not everything will be free. Basic tracking features are expected to be included, but advanced insights and AI-driven coaching will likely sit behind a subscription.
That puts pressure on the Fitbit Air to deliver where it matters. Without a screen, the appeal comes down to accuracy, battery life, and genuinely useful insights. The same areas where Whoop has built its reputation. This is particularly true among athletes.
The timing also feels important. Since acquiring Fitbit, Google has largely focused on the Pixel Watch, leaving a gap for a more fitness-first wearable. If the Fitbit Air launches later this year with a possible debut at Google I/O, it could mark the company’s first serious push into that space. This push would be under its own vision.
