If you were hoping Apple might finally bring Touch ID to the Apple Watch, a new leak suggests you probably shouldn’t hold your breath.
According to serial leaker Instant Digital, Apple currently has no plans to add on-device biometric authentication to its smartwatch lineup, despite earlier rumours hinting that the company had been experimenting with fingerprint security internally.
Right now, the Apple Watch still relies on a fairly simple system, with users able to unlock it either with a PIN or via a connected iPhone. The watch stays unlocked as long as it detects it’s still being worn. While that setup can feel a little old-school compared to Face ID-equipped iPhones and iPads, adding something like Touch ID to the Watch apparently isn’t as straightforward as it sounds.

The main issue seems to come down to space. The Apple Watch is already crammed with batteries, sensors and health-tracking hardware, so there is very little room for extra components like a fingerprint reader. According to the leak, Apple would rather prioritise battery life and future health features than sacrifice internal space for biometrics.
Honestly, that lines up with how Apple has approached the Watch for years. Each generation tends to focus more on wellness tracking, battery optimisation and sensor upgrades. Rather than adding entirely new authentication systems, Apple has prioritised these areas.
That doesn’t mean Apple hasn’t explored alternatives behind the scenes, though. Earlier this year, code references reportedly hinted that Apple had at least tested Touch ID on internal Apple Watch builds. The company has also filed patents for vein-mapping technology that could allow wearables to recognise users through blood vessel patterns rather than fingerprints.
Still, patents and prototypes don’t always turn into shipping products. Additionally, Instant Digital claims Apple’s current strategy remains centred around seamless iPhone integration rather than standalone biometric security on the Watch itself.
For now, it looks like Apple Watch users will continue unlocking their wearable the same way they already do — with a PIN, or simply by keeping an unlocked iPhone nearby.
