Gmail Live wants you to have a chat with your inbox

Google is bringing even more AI into Gmail, and this time it’s making email search feel a lot more like having a conversation with Gemini.

Announced during Google I/O 2026, the company revealed a new feature called Gmail Live. In addition, there is a wider rollout of its AI Inbox experience to more paid Gemini subscribers.

The biggest change is Gmail Live itself. Rolling out this summer on Android and iOS, the feature adds a Gemini Live-style voice assistant directly into Gmail’s search bar.

Tap the waveform icon, and Gmail opens a full-screen conversational interface. Here, users can ask natural questions about their inbox instead of typing keywords and hoping for the best.

For example, users could ask things like “What was that restaurant booking Emily sent me last month?” or “Did I ever reply to the client about the invoice?” Gmail then responds conversationally. It provides live transcripts and support for follow-up questions.

It’s basically Google turning email search into a chat experience. This honestly makes sense considering how overloaded most inboxes have become.

Alongside Gmail Live, Google is also expanding AI Inbox beyond its most expensive AI Ultra subscription. The feature is now coming to both AI Plus and AI Pro users too. This gives a wider group access to Gmail’s AI-powered inbox management tools.

Rather than sorting emails traditionally, AI Inbox tries to organise things around what actually matters. Messages are grouped into sections like “Suggested to-dos” and “Topics to catch up on.” These sections help users prioritise tasks instead of endlessly scrolling through unread emails.

Google is also adding a few genuinely useful upgrades here. Users can now mark all emails within a topic as read. They can also dismiss AI suggestions they don’t care about, and jump directly into linked Docs, Sheets, or Slides from within Gmail’s AI cards.

Perhaps the most Gemini-like addition, though, is contextual AI-generated replies. Gmail can now create personalised draft responses based on the conversation and surrounding context. This makes quick replies a little less robotic than the standard smart replies we’ve had for years.

Gmail Live launches this summer for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the US in English first. At the same time, AI Inbox is now expanding to AI Plus and AI Pro users as well.
