Insta360 may have found a fresh way to rethink POV filming

Insta360 has teased one of the more interesting camera accessories we’ve seen in a while.

Ahead of the launch of its Luna Ultra camera, the company has teased a new POV Head Tracker.

The accessory, which appears to clip onto the user’s ear, is designed to work alongside the Luna Ultra’s gimbal system. Rather than relying on a fixed chest mount or body camera, the setup would allow the camera to follow the wearer’s head movements and create a perspective that more closely matches what they’re actually looking at.

That could solve one of the biggest frustrations with traditional POV footage. Chest-mounted cameras often point slightly away from the action, while head-mounted cameras can be bulky and uncomfortable. Insta360’s approach appears to use a lightweight tracker to control the camera remotely instead.

The teaser showed the Luna Ultra mounted on a chest rig, though it can be placed on a tripod or positioned elsewhere while staying synchronised with the user’s movements. When combined with the camera’s motorised gimbal, this could result in smoother and more dynamic footage.

What’s particularly interesting is that the head tracker appears to be part of a wider accessory ecosystem.

Taken together, it looks like Insta360 is positioning the Luna Ultra as something more flexible than a typical pocket gimbal camera. Rather than competing directly with devices like DJI’s Osmo Pocket range on hardware alone, the company seems to be focusing on modular accessories that can expand how creators can shoot.

There are still plenty of unanswered questions. Insta360 hasn’t revealed how responsive the tracking will be during fast movements. Additionally, it’s unclear whether motion smoothing will be available or if the ear-mounted accessory will offer any audio monitoring features.

Still, if the system works as advertised, Insta360 may have found a genuinely fresh way to approach POV filming. This is especially relevant for creators who usually have to choose between operating the camera themselves or bringing along a second pair of hands.
