Insta360 finally reveals the Luna Ultra – can it rival the DJI Osmo Pocket 4?

Insta360 has officially unveiled the Luna Ultra, its first dedicated gimbal camera co-engineered with Leica. It looks like a serious attempt to challenge DJI’s dominance in the pocket camera space.

While the DJI Osmo Pocket series has long been the go-to choice for creators who want stabilised video in a compact package, Insta360 is taking a slightly different approach.

Rather than focusing solely on portability, the Luna Ultra combines a larger imaging system and modular accessories. It also features AI-powered shooting tools designed to give solo creators more flexibility.

Insta360 Luna features

The headline feature is a Leica-engineered camera system built around a 1-inch sensor capable of shooting 8K video at 30fps.

Alongside that sits a dedicated telephoto camera with up to 12x zoom, including 6x lossless zoom. This gives users more shooting options than the fixed-lens setup typically found on rival pocket cameras.

Insta360 is also leaning heavily into creator-friendly features. The Luna Ultra includes an industry-first detachable 2-inch OLED touchscreen. This allows users to monitor footage remotely from up to 20 metres away. Combined with the optional POV Head Tracker accessory that Insta360 recently teased, it could make filming without a second camera operator significantly easier.

The camera itself remains impressively portable. Weighing just over 200g, it packs a 3-axis gimbal stabilisation system and electronic image stabilisation. Insta360’s Deep Track 5.0 technology is also included, which supports features such as Auto Tracking, Active Zoom Tracking and Smart Framing.

Elsewhere, there’s support for Dolby Vision recording, 10-bit I-Log capture and up to 14 stops of dynamic range. A Triple AI Chip handles image processing duties. Low-light performance also gets a boost through a dedicated PureVideo mode, which promises cleaner and brighter footage in darker environments.

The wider ecosystem may end up being one of Luna Ultra’s biggest selling points. Insta360 is launching accessories including ND filters, Black Mist filters and a wide-angle lens attachment. There is also direct microphone integration and the new head-tracking system, making the Luna Ultra feel more like a modular creator platform than a standalone camera.

Insta360 Luna Ultra release date and price

The Insta360 Luna Ultra is available from June 10 in Cosmic Black and Stellar White, with pricing starting at $769.99.
