Nintendo Switch 2 OLED rumours just got a lot more interesting

A new report claims that Nintendo is considering an OLED version of its latest console – however, it may still be several years away from hitting shelves.

According to a report from ZDNet Korea, Nintendo is reviewing plans for a Switch 2 OLED model featuring a Full HD (1920 x 1080) OLED display.

That would mark a notable jump over the original Switch OLED, which used a 1280 x 720 OLED panel. Moreover, it would also bring the richer contrast and deeper blacks that helped make the first OLED model so popular. The Switch 2 available now uses a 1080p LCD.

However, the project doesn’t appear to be finalised. Industry sources cited in the report claim Nintendo is still weighing whether the upgrade makes financial sense. In particular, rising memory costs continue to put pressure on hardware manufacturing across the tech industry.

If the company decides to move ahead, development could reportedly begin before the end of this year. Mass production is pencilled in for late 2027 or early 2028. Therefore, any OLED version of the Switch 2 is unlikely to arrive for at least another couple of years.

The report also claims Samsung Display is expected to supply the OLED panels if the project gets the green light. Samsung previously partnered with Nintendo on the original Switch OLED, making it a logical choice should a successor move forward.

For now, though, this remains firmly in the rumour stage. Nintendo has yet to announce any plans for a refreshed Switch 2, and the company could still decide against launching an OLED model. This might happen if manufacturing costs remain too high.

Reports surfaced last month suggesting Nintendo was exploring a revised LCD for the Switch 2. This would help reduce the ghosting issues some early users have experienced. In contrast, an OLED model would represent a more substantial mid-generation refresh. This would follow a strategy similar to the original Switch line up.

Until Nintendo confirms its roadmap, it’s best to treat these claims with plenty of caution. Even so, with OLED displays now common across premium handheld gaming devices, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Nintendo eventually give the Switch 2 the same treatment.
