Homey has become one of the first smart home platforms to gain Matter 1.5 certification, adding support for newer smart home device categories.
At the same time, Homey continues to solve one of Matter’s biggest challenges: integrating older devices that were never designed for the standard.
The certification, awarded by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), applies to Homey’s Matter software component running on the Homey Pro (2023–2026), Homey Pro mini, and Homey Self-Hosted Server. As a result, it enables support for the latest Matter 1.5 device types like EV chargers, heat pumps, solar panels and major household appliances.
However, the bigger story is that Homey isn’t just adding support for new Matter products. Instead, the platform also lets users expose many of their existing smart home devices to other ecosystems using its Matter Bridge app.
That means devices already connected to Homey over Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, infrared, 433MHz or even manufacturer-specific cloud integrations can appear as standard Matter accessories. These can then be seen in platforms such as Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings and Home Assistant.
Rather than replacing existing integrations, Homey continues managing the original device – it just shares its Matter-compatible features with the chosen smart home platform. Supported categories currently include lights, smart plugs, thermostats, door locks, window coverings and various sensors. However, available features can vary depending on the ecosystem.
“Matter is making it easier to choose smart home products across brands, but a real home contains much more than Matter alone,” said Athom CEO Stefan Witkamp. “Most people already own devices that will never speak Matter natively, and those should stay just as usable as anything they buy tomorrow.”
The update is available now for compatible Homey hardware. Both the Homey Pro and Homey Pro mini include a built-in Thread Border Router that allows them to connect directly to Matter-over-Thread devices. Meanwhile, users running Homey Self-Hosted Server can add Thread devices through the Homey mobile app provided there’s an existing Thread Border Router on their local network.
Homey’s certification was issued on June 29, 2026, for firmware version 13.3.0, though the platform remains backwards compatible with devices based on earlier versions of the Matter standard.
While Matter continues to mature, Homey’s approach could make the transition less disruptive, allowing older smart home products to continue working alongside the latest Matter-compatible devices.
