Samsung has only just unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, but attention is already turning to what’s next.
According to a report from Galaxy Club, Samsung’s internal roadmap for 2027 includes the expected Galaxy Z Flip 9, Galaxy Z Fold 9, Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra, and a second-generation Galaxy Z TriFold. However, the leak also references a fifth handset under the mysterious codename “Z9”. There are no clues yet as to what it might be.
The report doesn’t reveal any specifications or design details for the unidentified device. But it does hint that Samsung could be preparing to expand its foldable portfolio beyond the formats we’ve already seen.
The internal codenames lend some credibility to the report. The Galaxy Z Fold 9 is reportedly known as H9, while the Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra carries the Q9A designation. Q9B is said to refer to the next-generation Galaxy Z TriFold.
That naming convention mirrors Samsung’s previous development cycle. Last year’s Galaxy Z TriFold was reportedly developed under the Q7M codename. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 was internally known as Q7. This suggests Samsung is continuing a similar approach for its future foldable lineup.
As for the mysterious Z9, there’s little to go on. One possibility is that Samsung could finally be preparing a rollable smartphone, a concept the company has been linked with for several years. More recent reports from South Korea have suggested Samsung Display is developing rollable OLED panels. However, those claims point to 2028 rather than 2027 as a potential launch window.
Without additional leaks, however, the identity of the fifth device remains entirely speculative. The codename alone isn’t enough to determine whether it’s a rollable phone, an entirely new foldable form factor or something else altogether.
Given how early this roadmap has surfaced, it’s also worth treating the information with caution. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and the rest of the current foldable lineup are still in their launch window. Still, it’s an interesting whisper that suggests Samsung isn’t done with experimenting just yet.
