Garmin’s next flagship outdoor smartwatch range could be broader than previously expected. The company is reportedly preparing three Fenix 9 models, including a solar-powered version that revives the long-running Memory-in-Pixel (MiP) display option.
Earlier rumours suggested the Fenix 9 lineup would move entirely to AMOLED displays, following the direction of Garmin’s recent premium watches. However, the latest leak indicates that won’t be the case. Instead, Garmin is reportedly continuing to offer a choice between display technologies on some models.
According to Garmin Rumors, the company is planning to launch the Fenix 9, Fenix 9 Pro, and Fenix 9 Pro inReach. The biggest surprise is that both Pro models are said to be available with either an AMOLED display or a MiP panel with integrated solar charging. This gives buyers the option of prioritising battery life over display vibrancy.
That could be welcome news for hikers, runners and endurance athletes who have long favoured Garmin’s solar-equipped watches. For comparison, the 47mm Fenix 8 Solar is rated for up to 28 days of battery life under typical use. Meanwhile, the similarly sized Fenix 8 AMOLED lasts up to 16 days, or around seven days with its always-on display enabled.
The report also suggests Garmin may shake up its naming strategy. Rather than offering separate Sapphire editions, the Fenix 9 Pro could become the default premium option. It may potentially add features such as a sapphire crystal display cover and higher-end construction.
Another notable change could affect satellite connectivity. Previous rumours suggested Garmin’s inReach technology would become standard across the Pro range. However, the latest report claims it will instead be reserved for the dedicated Fenix 9 Pro inReach model.
Size options also appear set to expand. All three watches are reportedly expected to be offered in a 43mm case. However, the MiP display and solar charging combination is said to remain exclusive to models measuring 47mm or larger.
As with any pre-launch leak, these details should be treated with caution until Garmin makes an official announcement. However, if accurate, the Fenix 9 range could offer significantly more choice than initially expected.
