Huawei has expanded its budget smartphone lineup with the launch of the Nova 16 SE. While it sits below the flagship end of the market, it packs one feature that immediately stands out: an enormous 8,500mAh battery.
Officially unveiled in China, the Nova 16 SE combines that sizeable battery with a large AMOLED display, a new Kirin chipset and fast charging, making it one of the most battery-focused Android phones announced this year.
The handset sports a 6.84-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Meanwhile, Huawei claims it can reach up to 8,000 nits peak brightness. Under the hood is the company’s Kirin 8020 processor, paired with up to 512GB of storage depending on the configuration.
Battery life is the clear headline feature. The 8,500mAh cell is considerably larger than the batteries found in most smartphones, paired with 66W wired fast charging to reduce downtime when it eventually needs topping up.
On the camera front, the Nova 16 SE opts for a relatively simple setup. Around the back is a 50MP primary camera alongside a 1.5MP Red Maple colour sensor. Meanwhile, selfies are handled by a 32MP front-facing camera.
The phone ships with HarmonyOS 6.1 and includes several connectivity features that are uncommon at the budget price point. These include two-way satellite messaging, dual-band Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC, GPS, USB-C and dual-SIM support.
Huawei has also given the Nova 16 SE an IP65 rating for dust and water resistance. Buyers can choose from four finishes: Cherry Blossom Snow Sky, Dawn Orange, Starry Night Black and Sky White.
Pricing starts at CNY 2,499 (around $370) for the 128GB model; the 256GB version costs CNY 2,699 (around $400), and the range-topping 512GB variant is CNY 3,199 (around $475).
The Huawei Nova 16 SE is available to order now through Huawei’s online store in China, with shipments scheduled to begin next week. While there’s no word yet on an international release, its huge battery capacity could make it an appealing option for users who prioritise endurance over flagship-level performance.
