Sony’s Wolverine yellow PS5 costs $650 – and of course it’s the Digital Edition

Sony is giving the PlayStation 5 a makeover ahead of the release of Marvel’s Wolverine, with a limited-edition yellow PS5 Digital Edition, DualSense controller and console covers.

The standout is the PS5 Digital Edition – Marvel’s Wolverine Battle Yellow Limited Edition Bundle, which costs $650/£569. It features Wolverine’s signature yellow colour, his face on the console and his iconic claw marks. The matching DualSense uses the same design, although the colour scheme is inverted.

Considering Sony has recently announced it is stopping production of new games on discs, it’s hardly surprising this model is the digital-only PS5 without a drive for physical media.

The limited-edition hardware will be available on September 15, the same day Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine arrives exclusively on PS5. Pre-orders open on August 19 at 10 am local time.

If $650 is too much for a new console, Sony is also selling Wolverine-themed accessories separately. The Battle Yellow DualSense costs $85. Meanwhile, a second DualSense is available in an Adamantium finish, inspired by Wolverine’s famous metal skeleton, for the same $85/£74.99 price.

Existing PS5 owners can instead give their console a makeover with the new limited-edition covers. The standard PS5 Slim covers are available in Battle Yellow for $75/£64.99. In addition, PS5 Pro owners can choose between Battle Yellow and Adamantium finishes. Each set costs $75/£64.99.

The limited-edition hardware is clearly designed to build anticipation for Sony’s upcoming superhero game. The company is taking a similar approach to its Spider-Man 2 hardware releases.

The PS5 bundle and Battle Yellow DualSense will be sold through the Sony Direct Store and select retailers. However, Sony has yet to confirm which retailers will stock them. The Adamantium DualSense and console covers will be exclusive to the Sony Direct Store.

As with previous limited-edition PlayStation hardware, availability could be an issue. The source expects these products to sell quickly, with limited restocks likely after the initial launch.

Marvel’s Wolverine itself launches on September 15. The PS5-exclusive is being developed by Insomniac Games, the studio behind the excellent Marvel’s Spider-Man series.

For fans who want something more distinctive than the standard PS5, the Battle Yellow bundle is certainly one of Sony’s more eye-catching limited editions. Just be prepared to pay a premium for the Wolverine treatment.
