Apple may add a Camera Control button to the iPad

Apple may be considering bringing the iPhone’s Camera Control button to the iPad, according to a newly granted patent. The filing details a pressure-sensitive control that can detect taps, swipes and full presses. This suggests Apple has been exploring a version of the button for its tablets.

The patent, titled “Input System for Portable Electronic Device”, mostly shows iPad-style devices across its 20 drawings and charts. Apple doesn’t explicitly call the device an iPad, instead referring more generally to tablets. However, three of the illustrations depict an iPhone while several others focus closely on how the proposed control would work.

The technology described is remarkably similar to the Camera Control introduced with the iPhone 16 range in 2024. Rather than being a simple physical button, Apple describes an “input member” or “strain sensing element” capable of responding to different levels of pressure.

The proposed control would use two strain-sensing elements to determine where and how hard the user is pressing. A lighter input could register a touch, while the control could also detect a swipe and a harder press. A dome switch would then collapse when enough force is applied, providing a more conventional physical press.

Apple even specifies the force thresholds. The first threshold for the touch-sensitive control is described as being between 0.8 and 1.2 Newtons. The second is between around 3.0 and 4.0 Newtons. Additionally, pressing within the relevant range would also trigger haptic feedback.

That would give an iPad version of Camera Control much the same functionality as the existing iPhone button. However, the patent doesn’t make clear whether there are any meaningful technical differences between the two implementations.

The patent is also not entirely new. It follows an earlier version of the same proposal filed in December 2025, which suggests Apple has been considering the idea for some time. However, that still doesn’t mean an iPad with Camera Control is on the way.

Apple files hundreds of patents, and even a granted patent isn’t a guarantee that the technology will appear in a finished product. For now, the filing simply offers a glimpse at one of the ideas Apple has been exploring for its iPad lineup.
