Xiaomi has unveiled a new foldable that takes a noticeably wider approach to the passport-style design, putting it on track to look quite different from Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8. We got our first glimpse of the Xiaomi Fold 18 Pro at IFA 2026, although Xiaomi is keeping most of its specifications under wraps for now.
For the moment, the company is only allowing us to view the phone on display, with more details promised on September 7 – a couple of days before Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone Ultra, which will be its first foldable phone.
That means we’ll have to wait a little longer for definitive screen sizes, camera specifications and other hardware details.
What we do know is that Xiaomi has opted for a wider display proportion on both the phone’s outer and foldable screens. That could make the Fold 18 Pro feel shorter and broader than the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which uses a taller, narrower design. It’s an interesting choice, particularly as manufacturers continue to experiment with the ideal shape for book-style foldables.
The design itself is hard to miss, thanks to a bright supercar-red finish. There’s also Leica branding on the camera module, suggesting Xiaomi is continuing its focus on photography, although the company hasn’t revealed the camera hardware yet.

The Fold 18 Pro will also use Xiaomi’s own XRING 03 chipset. The company describes it as a “Flagship AI SoC”, with the chip combining CPU, GPU and NPU components alongside dedicated AI processing. Xiaomi hasn’t shared detailed performance figures, so it’s too early to say how the XRING 03 will compare with the silicon inside Samsung’s latest foldable.

There’s still plenty we don’t know, including the exact display sizes, cameras and other specifications. Xiaomi has confirmed that the Fold 18 will launch in China on September 7, when we should get a much clearer picture of what this wider foldable has to offer.
For now, though, the design alone makes the Fold 18 Pro an interesting alternative to Samsung’s approach. The wider shape could prove more comfortable for some tasks, while also making the phone look distinctly different from the growing number of book-style foldables.
