Like darts but not the maths? Winmau Autodarts tracks your game automatically

Darts has grown massively in recent years, but while it’s popular as a spectator sport, the maths involved can put off the casual player. That’s what the Winmau Autodarts system aims to solve, with hardware and software that removes the maths required, guides players through games and rules, and provides players with multiple ways to play the game.

Rather than requiring a special dartboard and darts, the system has several ways to make the game more automated, both for newcomers and those looking to improve their game.

An app for all

A key part of the system is the Autodarts app, which uses LENS to turn a smartphone camera into a scoring assistant. Point the camera at the dartboard (handheld, propped up, or with the optional tripod), and the app provides intelligent scoring, online play (so you can play against people worldwide), insights, and guidance.

The app will work with any darboard and darts, so you can use LENS at home or even on the board in your local pub.

For online play, the Autodarts app gives players online matching to 200,00 players. You can play friends, use matchmaking to find opponents at a similar level, or even play against AI. In this regard, the Autodarts app turns physical darts into something much more akin to online gaming.

Auto-scoring tracks each throw, offers guidance on where to aim and calculates the checkouts needed.

There’s a free version of the app available to get started with, which gives you five games a month, but a £5.99 a month subscription unlocks more features and games modes.

A full dartboard upgrade

For those ready to improve their existing game, there’s the Winmau Autodarts X (£449.99), which clips onto a standard dartboard with no drilling. Four HD cameras track the board, and a light ring keeps it illuminated for a professional-grade darts experience.

Autodarts X can be used without a subscription with unlimited online gaming, but subscribe to the service and you get some additional game modes (Killer, for example), an AI-powered automatic ref, and in-depth stats that can help you improve your game.

Winmau Autodarts is available now, with the app and lens available now; Autodarts X will be available for pre-order in October, shipping in November.
