Apple has brought several of its more advanced AirPods features to the new AirPods 5, including active noise cancellation (ANC), Adaptive Audio and improved personalised spatial audio. The new earbuds start at $129, matching the price of the AirPods 4 without ANC.
The biggest change is Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) becoming standard on the AirPods 5. Apple says the new model delivers the best noise cancellation it has offered in an open-ear design, while also improving Transparency mode to make it easier to stay aware of your surroundings when needed.
The AirPods 5 also feature a new acoustic architecture designed to improve the overall listening experience. Personalised spatial audio has been enhanced, while Adaptive Audio can automatically adjust how much outside sound you hear depending on your surroundings.
Apple is also bringing some of its newer AI-powered features to the earbuds. Siri can now make use of personal context, allowing users to interact with the assistant hands-free in a more useful way. Live Translation is supported too, although it requires a connected iPhone. The feature originally launched last autumn and allows conversations to be translated through the AirPods.
There are two versions of the AirPods 5. The standard model costs $129 and comes with a wireless charging case, while a second version adds an on-stem control option borrowed from the AirPods Pro range. The latter also gets longer battery life, with up to five hours of listening with ANC enabled, and costs $149.
That makes the more advanced version $30 cheaper than the previous generation, while the standard AirPods 5 keep the same $129 starting price as the AirPods 4 without ANC.
Pre-orders are available now, with the new AirPods 5 set to launch on 18 September. With ANC, Adaptive Audio and improved spatial audio now available without stepping up to Apple’s Pro range, the new model looks like a more capable option for buyers who prefer an open-ear design.
