The new Apple Watches can automatically recall your conversations

Apple has added a Live Rewind feature to the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 that transcribes the last 15 seconds of speech at the double-press of the Digital Crown.

That transcript appears instantly on the watch face, and wearers can ask Siri follow-up questions about it or save the text to the new Siri app for later reference instead of replaying a recording.

According to Apple, Live Rewind neither creates nor stores an audio recording, since the watch processes speech entirely on-device and discards the original sound as soon as a transcript exists.

That same processing pipeline also prevents Apple from accessing the raw audio, and the resulting transcripts never attribute individual speakers within a conversation, a distinction Apple draws against dedicated AI wearables that keep permanent audio recordings.

Siri Recap and everyday conversations

Beyond single moments, Siri Recap applies the same ambient listening approach across an entire meeting or conversation and produces an auto-generated title, summary, and key points inside the new Siri app.

Despite that ambient listening, the finished recap excludes verbatim transcripts of the conversation itself, since the feature summarises rather than records what was said and stores only the structured notes in the Siri app.

Apple lets wearers leave Audio Intelligence running throughout the day, trigger it manually, or restrict it to specific locations through an always-on setting, a set schedule, or a simple Control Centre toggle.

A separate Sound Recognition feature listens for sirens, doorbells, alarms, and crying babies, and it alerts wearers who are deaf or hard of hearing even when no iPhone is nearby.

Both Live Rewind and Siri Recap require Siri AI on a paired iPhone, and Apple plans to launch them in beta later this year in English first, before other languages join once Siri AI reaches a wider iPhone rollout.

Saved transcripts and recaps sync across a wearer’s devices through iCloud, and Apple encrypts that connection end-to-end so the notes stay readable only on that person’s own devices, in line with Apple’s broader end-to-end encryption approach for iCloud data.

Apple has not said whether Live Rewind and Siri Recap will extend to earlier Apple Watch models once Siri AI arrives on iPhone later this year, so the features remain tied for now to the Series 12 and Ultra 4.
