Kobo has finally fixed one of the biggest frustrations with its e-readers: getting your reading progress to sync properly between devices and apps.
The long-running issue meant that switching between two Kobo e-readers, or moving from an e-reader to the Kobo app, could leave your reading progress out of sync. That made Kobo feel noticeably less seamless than Kindle. On Kindle, cross-device syncing has long been a core part of the experience.
Now, Kobo says the problem has been fixed, although there’s one quick step you’ll need to take to make the change work. Kobo CEO Michael Tamblyn explained in a series of Bluesky posts. According to him, fixing the issue required rebuilding large parts of the company’s backend infrastructure. As a result, syncing should work properly across supported Kobo devices and the app.
If you only use one Kobo e-reader, there’s not much here for you. But if you regularly switch between devices or use the Kobo app alongside your reader, this is a welcome change.
To activate the fix on a Kobo e-reader, head to Settings > Device Information > Repair Your Kobo Account. If your device has an update waiting to install, you’ll need to complete that first.
The process is similar in the Kobo app, although the menu is slightly different. Go to Account > Repair Your Account, and once that’s done, your e-book progress should sync as expected.
One notable exception is that side-loaded books aren’t covered by the fix. So if you’ve loaded your own DRM-free books onto Kobo, don’t expect their reading progress to magically follow you between devices just yet.
Still, this is a meaningful improvement for anyone invested in the Kobo ecosystem. The company hasn’t added some flashy new feature here; it has fixed something that should have worked properly in the first place. After years of unreliable syncing, that’s arguably more useful.
