Canon’s EOS R8 Mark II arrives with huge video upgrades

With 4K 60fps, 10-bit recording, up to 14 stops of dynamic range and up to 7.5 stops of image stabilisation, the Canon EOS R8 Mark II is a surprisingly capable full-frame camera without being too bulky.

The R8 Mark II uses a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and can shoot at up to 40fps, with bursts lasting up to 190 JPEG or 73 RAW shots. There’s also continuous pre-capture, which records the 20 frames before you fully press the shutter.

Autofocus gets a boost too. Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II covers the entire frame with 1,053 AF zones and can recognise people, animals and vehicles, including specific body parts such as eyes. You can also register up to 10 faces for priority focusing. For low-light photography, the IBIS system provides up to 7.5 stops of shake correction.

Video is where the biggest changes show up. The camera can record 6K-oversampled 4K60p in 4:2:2 10-bit H.265/HEVC at 225Mbps, with Canon Log 3 providing up to 14 stops of dynamic range. Full HD recording goes up to 180fps for slow-motion footage while stabilisation and AI autofocus remain available while recording. There’s also a micro HDMI output and 3.5mm stereo microphone input give creators options for external monitors and audio.

There are some useful creator-focused touches, too. Product shooting gets automatic exposure with zone autofocus, while timelapse recording can be handled in-camera.

For framing, the R8 Mark II has a 0.39-inch, 2.36-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder and a 3-inch, 1.62-million-dot vari-angle touchscreen. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), Bluetooth 5.3 and USB-C for file transfers, live streaming and remote control.

Despite all that, the camera weighs just 546g with its battery and card, measuring 131.4 x 90.0 x 79.7mm.

The EOS R8 Mark II costs $1,899 for the body, or $2,099 with Canon’s 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens. Both are available to pre-order now, with shipping starting October 20, 2026.
