Apple’s long-rumoured smart glasses could arrive before its next major Vision Pro upgrade, with a new report pointing to a late 2027 launch.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is targeting the end of 2027 for its smart glasses, although that doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll get a full augmented reality headset straight away. The first version is expected to follow the approach of Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, combining cameras, audio and smart features without a built-in display.
That would make them quite different from the Apple Vision Pro, which puts displays and spatial computing at the centre of the experience. Apple is reportedly considering adding a display to a later generation of its glasses.
The 2027 timeframe isn’t entirely new, either. Gurman previously pointed to late 2026 or early 2027, while analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted a late 2027 shipping schedule in 2025. Gurman later moved his own expectation to late 2027.
Apple is also apparently working on a much more ambitious successor to the Vision Pro. The project, codenamed N224, is described as a “completely revamped headset” and is still in the exploratory stage, with engineers looking at four different concepts.
One idea could involve moving some of the headset’s internal components into a separate puck, although that approach isn’t universally popular within Apple. The company has already faced criticism over the Vision Pro’s separate battery pack, and some senior staff reportedly see another tethered component as a poor user experience.
An all-in-one headset is therefore reportedly preferred, but making it lighter and cheaper without moving components elsewhere could be difficult.
There’s no guarantee N224 will make it to market, either. The project is apparently on “life support”, with Gurman suggesting a possible launch in late 2028 or early 2029 if Apple does move ahead.
That leaves the smart glasses as the more immediate part of Apple’s wearable plans. But even if 2027 remains the target, Apple has yet to confirm either product.
