Samsung’s Galaxy S27 Ultra could be getting a major camera redesign, with the first photos of early protective cases offering a better look at what’s changing. The cases broadly match previous CAD-based renders, but they also suggest one detail of the camera layout may still be up in the air.
Images shared by Ice Universe on X show a wide camera area with two larger lenses positioned on the left, alongside an oval-shaped cutout on the right for another camera, sensors and the LED flash.
There’s a small twist, though. One of the cases appears to place the third camera above the LED flash rather than below it, as shown in some earlier renders. That means the final arrangement may not be completely settled yet. The exact position of the laser autofocus sensor is also still unclear.
The wider redesign is expected to arrive in early 2027, with Samsung reportedly preparing at least two revamped high-end models: the Galaxy S27 Ultra and Galaxy S27 Pro. Both are expected to use a broad camera island, giving the phones a noticeably different look from the current generation and one that resembles the approach seen on Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro.
There could be more than just cosmetic changes under that redesigned exterior. The S27 Ultra is expected to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and a new 200-megapixel main camera sensor. More interestingly, the main camera could also take over 3x telephoto duties, potentially changing how Samsung handles its zoom system.
The existing 5x telephoto camera is expected to remain, as is the ultrawide camera, although the latter hasn’t been confirmed. Around the front, Samsung is reportedly planning a new 16-megapixel selfie camera.
The display could also receive a significant upgrade, with the S27 Ultra tipped to use new OLED material already adopted by competing phones. Samsung is also expected to finally improve the battery specifications.
There’s still plenty of time for these details to change before the Galaxy S27 Ultra arrives. But if these early cases are anything to go by, the camera redesign could be one of the most noticeable changes Samsung makes to its flagship in 2027.
