After months of internal debate, Valve could finally be close to locking in the price and release window for its long-awaited Steam Machine.
The hold-up appears to come down to pricing. Valve has reportedly been “going back and forth” on whether it’s willing to sell the system at a loss, at least initially. This represents a notable shift given earlier messaging that the Steam Machine wouldn’t follow the traditional console subsidy model. Instead, it was expected to land closer to a gaming PC in both performance and price.
That decision has been complicated by ongoing memory shortages, which have pushed up the cost of DDR5 RAM and storage. It’s one of the reasons why what was once expected to launch earlier has now slipped to a more vague 2026 release window.
There are signs, though, that things are moving. A recent leak around the Steam Controller, which reportedly carries a $100 price tag, hints that Valve’s hardware plans are starting to take shape again. If accurate, it also suggests the Steam Machine could sit firmly in premium territory and would not try to undercut consoles.

Even so, comparisons with traditional consoles haven’t gone away. Valve has positioned the Steam Machine as a living room-friendly PC, powered by Linux and designed to tap into Steam’s massive library. The inclusion of dual trackpads on the controller reinforces that hybrid PC-console approach.
Performance expectations, however, remain a bit of a question mark. Valve has previously suggested the system could handle 4K at 60fps, albeit with the help of upscaling. But concerns around hardware including reports of 8GB VRAM could make that target more situational. This is especially likely with newer, more demanding games.
The broader market context has shifted too. With consoles like the PS5 Pro pushing into higher price brackets, a more expensive Steam Machine might be easier to justify. However, how it stacks up in real-world performance will matter just as much as the price tag.
For now, nothing is official. But with leaks picking up and internal decisions reportedly close, Valve’s long-silent Steam Machine project may finally be nearing a proper reveal.
