Spotify is getting AI-generated remixes, and artists will actually get paid

A new licensing agreement between Spotify and Universal Music Group opens the door for Premium subscribers to generate AI-powered remixes and covers of streaming tracks, with participating artists collecting royalties from the content their listeners create.

The deal represents the first concrete product to emerge from a broader industry initiative that Spotify announced in October 2025, when the platform confirmed it was working alongside Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, Merlin, and Believe to develop what the companies described at the time as responsible AI products.

That earlier announcement offered little detail on what the programme would produce, but the fan-made remix tool now gives shape to the principles Spotify outlined then, covering artist participation choice, fair compensation, and the deepening of connections between musicians and their audiences.

Artist involvement remains opt-in rather than compulsory, meaning musicians retain control over whether their catalogues feed into the remix tool, while those who do participate access a new royalty stream generated directly by listener activity rather than passive streaming alone.

Spotify Co-CEO Alex Norström stated that the initiative is “grounded in consent, credit, and compensation for the artists and songwriters that take part,” a framing that positions the tool as an extension of existing rights frameworks rather than a departure from them.

Universal Music Group CEO Sir Lucian Grainge added that the programme reflects his company’s view that valuable innovation in the music industry brings artists and fans closer together, describing the feature as a superfan initiative built to support human artistry alongside new revenue creation.

The tool will operate as a paid add-on for existing Premium subscribers rather than a standalone product, though Spotify has not confirmed what the additional cost will amount to beyond the base subscription fee.

Spotify has not announced a launch date for the AI remix feature, with pricing beyond the Premium subscription tier and regional availability details yet to be confirmed.
