Android 17 has only been available for a few days but some Pixel owners are already reporting a frustrating bug that’s making their phones feel unreliable.
Users across Reddit and Google’s support channels say the update is causing touchscreen issues on several Pixel models, including the Pixel 7, Pixel 8, Pixel 9 and Pixel 10. The most common complaint is that the display briefly stops responding to touch inputs, while others report scrolling gestures behaving unpredictably.
In some cases, users say the phone appears to interpret swipe gestures in the opposite direction. For example, a swipe up can suddenly send a page scrolling down, which makes simple tasks like browsing apps or navigating menus unexpectedly frustrating.
The reports appear to point to a software issue rather than a hardware fault, with affected users flagging the problem across multiple Pixel generations – although the Pixel 6 appears to have escaped the bug so far. Older devices are also unaffected, though that’s purely because they are not eligible for the Android 17 update.
The issue doesn’t seem to be limited to a specific app either. Users report experiencing the freezes throughout the operating system, including in settings menus, the home screen, and third-party applications.
Google has acknowledged the complaints, but a fix has yet to arrive. An official Pixel Community account suggested clearing the Pixel Launcher cache or booting the device into Safe Mode as potential troubleshooting steps. However, several users who tried those solutions say the touchscreen behaviour remained unchanged.
The timing is particularly unfortunate given that Android 17 only began rolling out as part of Google’s latest Pixel software update. Alongside new features and system improvements, the release was intended to deliver a more polished experience. Specifically, it was supposed to improve across supported devices.
For now, affected users may have little choice but to wait for an official patch. While we always advise users to update software, it might be worth holding off updating to Android 17 for the time being – just until a fix has been implemented.
With reports continuing to surface less than a week after launch, Google will likely be under pressure to address the issue sooner rather than later.
