Plex has introduced a new five-year Plex Pass subscription just weeks after tripling the price of its Lifetime plan to a hefty $749.99.
The new option costs $249.99, which longtime Plex users may recognise as the old price of the Lifetime Plex Pass before the increase took effect on July 1. While it’s no longer a one-off purchase for permanent access, it does offer a way to lock in several years of service without paying monthly or annually.
The five-year plan now sits alongside Plex’s existing $6.99 monthly and $69.99 annual subscriptions. On paper, it’s the better value option. It costs roughly the same as three-and-a-half years of the annual plan, while covering five full years of access.
It’s clearly a response to the backlash surrounding the Lifetime price increase. Plex previously raised the cost of its one-time pass from $249.99 to $749.99, making it a much harder sell for anyone who hadn’t already bought in.
That said, the new subscription isn’t a direct replacement. Once the five years are up, users will need to pay again. This could mean another multi-year plan or switching to a monthly or annual subscription. There’s also no guarantee prices will stay the same; renewing in five years could cost considerably more.
Plex has argued that recurring subscriptions are a more sustainable way to fund development. The company previously revealed it had even considered scrapping the Lifetime Pass altogether. In fact, it said the new $749.99 price better reflects the long-term cost of maintaining and improving the platform.
For existing Plex users who missed the old Lifetime pricing, the five-year pass is arguably the closest equivalent now available. It’s significantly cheaper than paying $749.99 upfront and offers a lower overall cost than subscribing month-to-month.
Still, the latest pricing changes may encourage some users to look elsewhere. Free alternatives such as Jellyfin offer many of the same self-hosted media streaming features as Plex, though they generally require a little more setup and technical know-how.
Whether the five-year pass is enough to soften the blow of Plex’s dramatic Lifetime price hike will likely depend on how committed users are. Only time will tell.
