iPhone Air 2 could get the upgrade it desperately needs

Apple’s next ultra-thin iPhone could finally address one of the biggest compromises that comes with a slimmer design.

According to the latest rumour, the iPhone Air 2 will feature a battery with a capacity of 3,500mAh or more. That may not sound especially large compared to many Android flagships, but it would still mark an increase over the original iPhone Air’s 3,149mAh battery.

Battery life has been one of the main trade-offs for thinner smartphones. Therefore, even a modest capacity boost could make a noticeable difference if Apple pairs it with its usual software optimisations and more efficient hardware.

The battery isn’t expected to be the only upgrade. Previous reports have suggested Apple will equip the iPhone Air 2 with a 6.55-inch LTPO AMOLED display featuring a 120Hz refresh rate, matching most other modern iPhones (aside from ‘e’ branded models).

Performance could receive a healthy boost too. The handset will likely run on Apple’s upcoming 2nm A20 Pro chip, which is said to deliver improvements in both speed and power efficiency. If those claims prove accurate, the more efficient processor could help stretch battery life even further.

Photography may also see an upgrade. The leak points to a dual rear camera system, pairing a 48MP main sensor with an ultrawide camera. That would give the Air lineup more versatility than a single-lens setup while still maintaining the thinner design that defines the series.

Apple is widely expected to unveil the iPhone Air 2 in early 2027, alongside the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e. While the company hasn’t confirmed any details, the latest rumours suggest the second-generation Air won’t radically change the formula. Instead, it will focus on refining the experience with practical upgrades.

A slightly larger battery may not grab headlines on its own. Nevertheless, when combined with a faster chip, smoother display and upgraded cameras, it could make the iPhone Air 2 a more balanced option for buyers who want a slim iPhone without sacrificing too much battery life.
