Samsung is expanding its foldable lineup this year, and the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 looks set to be the biggest departure yet.
Rather than simply offering a cheaper version of the Ultra, Samsung is positioning it as a different kind of foldable altogether. It has a shorter, wider “passport-style” design aimed at everyday media consumption and AI-powered features.
Instead of chasing the biggest display possible, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 adopts a 7.6-inch inner display with a 4:3 aspect ratio and a 5.5-inch cover screen. The wider format is designed to make reading, browsing and watching videos feel more natural than on previous Fold models while also making the phone easier to use one-handed when closed.
Samsung says it’s also the lightest Fold model yet, tipping the scales at 201g. Both displays reach 3,000 nits peak brightness and include Vision Booster and an anti-reflective finish to improve visibility outdoors.

Powering the Fold 8 is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy processor. It is paired with 12GB of RAM and storage options ranging from 256GB to 1TB. Samsung also promises up to 26 hours of video playback from its 4,800mAh battery, and supports 45W wired and 20W wireless charging. According to Samsung, the phone can reach 63% charge in around 30 minutes using wired charging.
The camera setup is built around dual 50MP main and ultrawide snappers, with Samsung highlighting new software features rather than major hardware changes. Photo Assist brings AI-powered image editing, My Fan Cam can automatically reframe videos around a chosen subject, and Document Scan is designed to make capturing and organising paperwork easier.
AI plays a much larger role across the Fold 8 than on previous generations, with many of the new features designed to help users complete everyday tasks more quickly. You’ll get all the Galaxy AI features we’ve already seen on Samsung flagships, along with smarts that lets Gemini handle in-app tasks on your behalf. You’ll also be able to create custom widgets for the Now Brief.
Samsung is offering the Galaxy Z Fold 8 in Graphite, Cream, Lavender and Pistachio, with the latter exclusive to the Samsung Store.
Rather than simply sitting beneath the Ultra in the range, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 appears to target a different audience altogether. Its wider, passport-style design and emphasis on entertainment suggest Samsung is betting that not every foldable buyer wants the biggest screen or the most advanced camera. Instead, some will prefer a device that’s easier to live with every day.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is up for pre-order now alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Flip 8 and the new Galaxy Watch 9 range ahead of release on 7 August.
