Samsung’s Galaxy S27 Pro won’t be quite as capable as the Ultra is one key area

The heavily-rumoured Galaxy S27 Pro could fall short of the Galaxy S27 Ultra in one key area.

According to a report from ET News, Samsung is planning a significant overhaul of its flagship camera hardware for 2027. The biggest change could see the Galaxy S27 Ultra drop from four rear cameras to three. Even so, the phone could still improve its photography credentials.

The report claims the Ultra will pair a 200MP main camera with a 50MP ultrawide and a 50MP 5x telephoto camera. Notably absent is Samsung’s long-running 10MP 3x telephoto sensor. This sensor has featured on several previous Galaxy Ultra models with few meaningful upgrades.

Removing that extra telephoto camera would free up internal space. Meanwhile, it would also help Samsung reduce manufacturing costs. It also appears Samsung believes the 200MP primary sensor is now capable of delivering sufficiently detailed 3x zoom images through in-sensor cropping. Therefore, the dedicated 10MP lens is less necessary.

However, buyers considering the new Galaxy S27 Pro may have to settle for a less versatile zoom setup.

The report suggests the Pro model will retain the same 200MP primary and 50MP ultrawide cameras as the Ultra. However, it will swap the 50MP 5x telephoto for a more modest 12MP 3x telephoto camera. That would leave the Ultra as the only model in the range with Samsung’s most capable optical zoom hardware.

If accurate, the move would mark a different strategy from rivals. Both Apple and Google currently equip their Pro-sized flagship phones with the same 5x telephoto cameras found on their larger premium models. Therefore, users get identical zoom capabilities regardless of screen size.

The report also points to rising component costs as a possible factor behind Samsung’s decision. Ongoing shortages of DRAM and NAND memory have pushed up production costs across the industry. According to the report, Samsung’s mobile division is reportedly coming under pressure to protect its margins.

Elsewhere in the lineup, the standard Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27 Plus are said to keep the familiar 50MP main, 12MP ultrawide and 10MP 3x telephoto arrangement.

The report doesn’t mention the front-facing camera. However, an earlier rumour claimed both the Galaxy S27 Ultra and Galaxy S27 Pro could receive a new 16MP selfie camera, potentially offering a wider field of view than previous generations. As with all pre-release leaks, Samsung has yet to confirm any of these specifications.
