Samsung may have only just launched the Galaxy Watch 9, but early signs suggest the company is already working on another wearable that could last much longer.
According to a new leak, Samsung is developing a device codenamed Galaxy Aero that may ditch Google’s Wear OS in favour of a real-time operating system (RTOS). This change could pave the way for battery life measured in weeks rather than days.
The evidence comes from code discovered inside Samsung’s Galaxy Wearable smartphone app. As reported by SamMobile, the unreleased device appears under the codename “Samsung Galaxy Aero” alongside the identifier “galaxy_rtos_watch”. This strongly suggests it won’t use Wear OS like the company’s flagship Galaxy Watch lineup.
While the listing doesn’t reveal which RTOS Samsung plans to use, the operating system itself could be the biggest story. Unlike Wear OS, which can support a wide range of apps and Google services, RTOS platforms are considerably lighter. In other words, they require fewer system resources and consume less power.
That efficiency could translate into a significant leap in battery life. Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch 9 offers up to two days of use on a charge, but RTOS-based rivals routinely last much longer, usually a week or two, if not longer.
It’s too early to know exactly where the Galaxy Aero will fit into Samsung’s wearable portfolio. The company is also reportedly preparing the Galaxy Fit 4, an affordable fitness tracker that recently appeared in an FCC certification filing. This suggests Samsung could soon have multiple new wearables in development.
For now, there are no confirmed details about the Galaxy Aero’s specifications, pricing or launch window, and there’s also no guarantee the smartwatch will make it to market in its current form.
Even so, the move would mark a notable shift in Samsung’s wearable strategy. While Wear OS has brought richer app support and tighter integration with Google’s ecosystem, battery life has remained one of its biggest compromises.
An RTOS-powered Galaxy smartwatch could offer an alternative for users who prioritise longevity over third-party apps, potentially delivering the kind of multi-week endurance that has long been associated with dedicated fitness watches rather than full-featured smartwatches.
