The feature previously referred to as Pixel Glow will instead launch as HiLight it seems and new promotional materials also reveal how it could work once the phones arrive next week.
Well-known leaker Evan Blass has shared what appear to be official marketing images for the Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. Both reference the rear-facing LED under the HiLight branding. If accurate, it indicates Google has settled on a different name than earlier rumours suggested.
The feature is expected to be integrated into the Pixel 11 Pro series’ camera bar. An RGB LED strip will light up when the handset is placed face down. According to leaked material, HiLight will be able to signal incoming calls from selected contacts. It will also indicate when Gemini is active.
That alone would make it more than a simple notification light. However, Google’s full plans for the feature remain unclear ahead of launch.
A separate report from 9to5Google offers another clue after uncovering references to HiLight in the latest version of the Google Contacts app. Code strings suggest users will be able to assign different colours to individual contacts. This will make it possible to identify who’s calling without picking up the phone.
According to the report, the available colour options include Blue, Cyan, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple, Teal, White and Yellow. Whether Google plans to expand those options after launch remains to be seen.
The addition would give Pixel phones a feature that feels both nostalgic and modern. Dedicated notification LEDs were once common on Android handsets before disappearing as bezels shrank. Yet HiLight appears to reimagine the idea by embedding the light within the camera bar. It also ties it into Google’s AI-powered ecosystem.
Fortunately, there isn’t long to wait to find out exactly how it works. Google is expected to unveil the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold on August 12. On this date, the company should finally confirm whether HiLight is the official name. It will also reveal everything the new lighting system can do.
