Insta360’s Luna Pro set to be a single-sensor gimbal rival to the DJI Osmo Pocket 4

Insta360 has teased its next pocket-sized gimbal camera, the Luna Pro, ahead of its launch in China.

The new model will use a single camera rather than the dual-camera setup found on the Luna Ultra. Meanwhile, an early unboxing video has also given us a closer look at its design and some of its hardware.

The Insta360 Luna Pro is set to launch in China on August 20 at 8pm local time, with reservations already open. Insta360 has yet to confirm when, or if, the camera will be released globally.

The biggest difference from the Luna Ultra is the camera setup. The Ultra, which launched globally on June 10, features two cameras: a main camera with a 1-inch sensor and a telephoto camera with a 1/1.3-inch sensor offering up to 6x lossless zoom. The Luna Pro instead takes a simpler single-camera approach.

An unboxing video shared by Insta360 shows the Luna Pro in a white finish. Its retail packaging describes it as an “8K Gimbal Camera With 1″ Sensor”. Additionally, the packaging confirms Leica co-branding and suggests the camera will have a strong focus on image quality.

The video also reveals a detachable remote display, but Insta360 hasn’t provided further details on how it will work or what functionality it will offer.

For now, there are plenty of gaps in the specification sheet. Insta360 hasn’t confirmed the Luna Pro’s full camera specifications, battery life, stabilisation capabilities, storage options or price. That makes it difficult to say exactly how it will stack up against DJI’s Osmo Pocket range. Despite this, there is an obvious overlap in the pocket-sized gimbal camera market.

The timing is interesting, though. With the Luna Ultra already positioned as Insta360’s higher-end dual-camera option, the Luna Pro could give the company a more straightforward alternative. This would be for buyers who want a large 1-inch sensor without the added hardware of a second telephoto camera.

For now, the China launch on August 20 should provide the missing details. Whether Insta360 plans to bring the Luna Pro to other markets remains unclear.
