Dyson’s toothbrush comes with a built-in camera that scans your mouth

Dyson has launched a new $499/£419 electric toothbrush with a built-in camera that can scan between your teeth and automatically target those areas.

The CameraJet is Dyson’s latest attempt to bring more technology into everyday dental care, using an AI-powered camera system to identify gaps between teeth as you brush. The company says the system can detect these areas in real time and direct the toothbrush’s jet towards them, effectively combining brushing and water flossing into one device.

At the heart of the system is a 100,000-pixel macro camera with its own light. Dyson’s Gap Optical Targeting technology analyses 28 live images per second and can identify gaps between teeth within 100 milliseconds. The system was trained using 470,000 dental images collected during development.

Once a gap is detected, the CameraJet fires a burst of mouthrinse from its integrated jet. Dyson says the jet uses a conical design rather than the narrower, needle-like jets found in traditional water flossers, allowing it to cover a wider area at lower pressure.

The CameraJet also connects to your phone over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, letting you use the camera to see a live view inside your mouth. Its companion app provides coverage maps, guided cleaning and feedback on your brushing and flossing.

Dyson says no images are recorded or stored on the toothbrush or in the cloud, with the camera feed remaining private to the user.

The toothbrush itself has a 12.5ml built-in tank for mouthrinse. Dyson has designed what it calls an “anti-gravity” tank to ensure the jet can work in different orientations, including when brushing the back of your teeth with the device held horizontally. The charging dock can also refill the tank in three seconds.

There’s plenty of technology in the brush head, too. Each dual-bristle head has an RFID tag that lets the CameraJet track when it’s attached and how many times it has been used. Dyson has also added a sonic dampener to reduce noise, while variable sonic oscillation changes the brushing angle to help prevent the bristles from stalling.

The company claims external testing found the system removed up to 69% more plaque than leading premium electric toothbrushes in hard-to-reach areas.

The $499 CameraJet is available now from Dyson in Ceramic Ultra Blue and Ceramic Pink. It comes with two standard brush heads, a charging dock, charging cable and travel case. A sensitive brush head is also available for those with sensitive teeth and gums.

Dyson recommends using SLS-free toothpaste and clear, SLS-free mouthrinse, as foaming products can interfere with the camera. The company is also developing its own low-foaming mouthrinse and non-foaming toothpaste for the CameraJet, although neither has a confirmed release date yet.
