Roku and Sharp have pushed their long-running UK TV partnership into Mini LED territory for the first time, launching a new range available first through Argos in 50- and 55-inch sizes.
The launch builds on a partnership between Roku and Sharp that has delivered several generations of QLED sets, marking the first time Mini LED backlighting has reached the Sharp Roku TV line-up.
Mini LED backlighting relies on smaller and a higher number LEDs than conventional backlights for LCD TVs, and this new range will aim to apply local dimming with greater precision for deeper blacks and brighter highlights than standard LED panels typically achieve.
That level of contrast control pairs with support for Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG, formats that together cover most of the high dynamic range content available across streaming services.
Built-in audio processing under the Roku Audio banner targets a common limitation of slim, frameless television chassis, where there’s less space left for larger speaker drivers, aiming for clearer and fuller sound without external hardware.
The frameless design segues into a refined black finish and a central stand, a styling choice that mirrors premium sets from rival brands.
Every model runs the Roku TV operating system, providing access to thousands of free and paid streaming channels alongside universal search and personalised recommendations from a single customisable home screen.
The range also includes Freely, the aerial-free service that combines iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and Channel 5 with live channels delivered over a broadband connection rather than a traditional rooftop aerial.
The AV1 codec support rounds out its streaming credentials, a format used by services such as YouTube and Netflix to deliver high-quality video.
Rob Woollard, Director, Retail Partnerships at Roku UK, said: “This launch builds on the strong momentum we’ve seen across the Sharp Roku TV line-up. Bringing Mini-LED picture quality into the range shows exactly what this long-standing partnership is about: pairing great hardware with an easy, award-winning streaming experience. It reflects our ongoing ambition to keep raising the bar on picture quality with Sharp.”
The Sharp Roku TV Mini LED range is available first through Argos in the UK, spanning the 50-inch model (4T-C50JH6425KB), and 55-inch model (4T-C55JH6425KB). Pricing starts at £329.99 for the 50-inch model and goes up to £349.99 for the 55-inch version.
