The MindOne Pro is an unusual smartphone in more ways than one, and a new teardown shows just how much compromise comes with its distinctive design.
The compact flip-style phone uses a sapphire-glass display and a 50MP camera that rotates 180 degrees to work as both the front and rear camera, but the mechanism looks particularly fragile.
A recent teardown by JerryRigEverything takes a closer look at the MindOne Pro from Ikko, revealing what’s inside the unusual handset and putting some of its headline features to the test.
The phone has a compact square design similar in footprint to a Galaxy Z Flip, but it isn’t a conventional foldable. Instead, it has a fixed 4-inch AMOLED display with a 1080p resolution and 90Hz refresh rate. Inside, there’s a MediaTek MT8781 octa-core processor, 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of eMMC 5.1 storage.
The most eye-catching feature is the single 50MP camera module on the back. It can rotate through 180 degrees, allowing the same camera to be used for selfies and rear-facing photography.
That clever solution also appears to be the phone’s biggest durability concern. The teardown found that the camera module is held in place by relatively narrow pivot pins rather than a more substantial hinge mechanism. Under stress testing, the camera mechanism broke completely, although the rest of the phone’s casing remained intact.
The MindOne Pro isn’t built to withstand much water, either. It carries an IP54 rating, meaning it has some protection against dust and splashing but isn’t waterproof.
One area where the phone does appear to live up to its claims is the display. The screen is covered with sapphire glass, and testing showed scratches appearing only at a hardness level of 8 on the Mohs scale. The glass also survived direct exposure to a flame without visible damage.
Inside, the teardown revealed a 2,200mAh battery, graphite used for thermal management instead of thermal paste, and an unreinforced, unsealed speaker and vibration motor.
The phone’s “free global internet” feature is less impressive. Its network-independent AI mode is essentially an AI chatbot, and it’s allegedly slow and unable to process images. A separate VSIM data option is available, although its pricing wasn’t clear.
The MindOne Pro certainly isn’t another conventional smartphone. Its rotating camera and tiny form factor make it stand out, but the teardown suggests those unusual features come with some fairly obvious compromises.
