BT TV takes over from EE TV for BT Broadband customers on 15 October, and existing packages, prices and boxes stay the same.
Existing customers keep their channels, recordings and subscriptions such as Netflix, NOW and HBO Max, while the visible changes amount to BT branding on screen and a renamed BT TV Store.
App users face a small extra step, as anyone watching through the EE TV app on a phone, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung TV or web browser needs to move across to the new BT TV app or website.
Settings, scheduled recordings, purchases and rentals transfer automatically during the process, although offline downloads will require to be downloaded again and Apple TV owners will lose access to the EE TV app after 15th October.
BT offers the service through two set-top boxes, and the BT TV Box Pro handles pausing and rewinding live TV alongside streaming apps and storage for more than 600 hours of recordings.
Households with no need for live TV recording can opt for the compact BT TV Box Edge instead, which lacks the PVR features of its larger sibling and centres on streaming apps, on-demand titles and catch-up shows.
Both boxes share a single search tool that pulls results from multiple services into one list, which Luciano Oliveira, Managing Director Products, Consumer at BT, framed as a way out of a “maze of apps, subscriptions and devices.”
BT TV completes the line-up alongside BT broadband and BT Mobile, so BT-branded customers can take all three services from the same provider again rather than splitting TV off under the EE name.
Beyond the branding, BT pitches the service as one of the only options to combine live sport, live TV and streaming, though the likes of Sky, Freely and Vodafone have already pivoted to this approach.
BT has not published separate pricing for new BT TV customers, but existing BT Broadband customers on EE TV can expect to move across automatically from the 15th October onwards, while box owners only need to leave their device in standby overnight to receive the software update.
