Microsoft’s MacBook Pro rival is officially real – here are all the details

Microsoft has officially unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra, its most powerful Surface laptop yet, with a clear focus on local AI, 3D graphics and demanding creative workloads.

Powered by Nvidia’s new RTX Spark Superchip, the laptop is designed to handle everything from AI development to high-end gaming. It’s now available to pre-order for $2,599.99 in the US, putting it firmly in premium laptop territory alongside Apple’s MacBook Pro.

One of its biggest selling points is the ability to run demanding AI workloads locally, rather than relying entirely on cloud services. Microsoft says the Surface Laptop Ultra can support AI models with up to 120 billion parameters, with Nvidia CUDA acceleration helping developers prototype AI agents, review code and test larger models directly on the device.

This also means users can automate routine tasks and work with sensitive information without having to send everything to the cloud. For developers and businesses handling proprietary code or customer data, that’s a particularly useful addition.

Beyond AI, Microsoft is also making a strong push into graphics performance. The Surface Laptop Ultra supports Nvidia RTX features, including ray tracing, DLSS and Reflex, promising smoother gameplay and more responsive performance.

There’s also a 15-inch touchscreen display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Dolby Vision IQ support. Microsoft describes it as its brightest laptop display yet, with HDR capabilities designed for colour-sensitive creative work. The screen also supports direct interaction, including scrolling, signing documents and marking up content.

Microsoft hasn’t overlooked long-term usability either. The Surface Laptop Ultra comes with upgradeable SSD storage up to 2TB, alongside published repair guides, replacement parts and internal design features intended to make servicing easier.

Security is another priority, with Secured-core PC protection, device encryption and Windows Hello authentication through facial recognition, fingerprint or PIN.

Taken together, the Surface Laptop Ultra looks like Microsoft’s answer to users who want MacBook Pro-level ambitions but prefer Windows and Nvidia’s ecosystem. Its emphasis on local AI and GPU-intensive workloads could make it particularly appealing to developers, designers and content creators. Pre-orders are live now.
